Creating RSS Feeds for Non-Journal Websites

The MarketingStudies.net group of blogs obviously focuses on promoting content using RSS (and Atom) web feed technology. From some of my posts, you might think that you can only syndicate content using RSS if you have a blog (aka diary, journal, letters, etc.). This is not at all true.

Blog platform software makes it easy to create RSS feeds. In fact, they're usually created automatically. On the other hand, if you have a regular, non-blog website, creating an RSS feed means either doing it manually, using an appropriate CMS (Content Management System), or some other appropriate software.

Marketing genius Seth Godin (links below) blogs regularly about RSS and its effective use for site promotion. In his (short) post "If you have more than 100 pages of content", he briefly mentions FeedCraft, which builds feeds for non-blog sites. However, FeedCraft charges $200 for their service, according to Seth's post.

If you don't have the budget, or would rather do it yourself, there is a Firefox browser (versions 0.9.x to 1.5.0) extension called RSS Editor. It's an easy-to-use editor that lets you create and manage multiple RSS 2.0 web feeds. You can add, edit, or delete items as necessary, as well as manage channel information.

By the way, while you're at Seth Godin's site, you may want to check out his new, free, 18-pg (PDF) e-book, Flipping the Funnel. The book talks about ideaviruses and Web 2.0 tools.

Raj,

Just a clarification on Seth's post regarding FeedCraft. The price mentioned is for our premium service. There are two other plans offered including a free plan for creating RSS feeds. So, for someone looking to create an RSS feed, they still don't have to do it on their own.

Thanks,
Tom

Tom,

Thank you for the clarification. I should have looked into your service first. I'll keep your info in mind for the future.

I've created a feeds for all of my mail order catalog pages. You can subscribe to any catagory at www.speaktomecatalog.com With php it's almost as easy as writing an HTML page. Hmmm ... maybe it's time to put those orange buttons on the pages.

Seth, how did you create your feeds?
